'A monumental book … I defy anyone to read it and remain unmoved.' Stephen Venables, Alpine Journal Acclaimed as one of the most powerful accounts of mountain adventure and tragedy ever written, The Endless Knot is a harrowing account of the 1986 K2 disaster. A rare first-hand account from a survivor at the very epicentre of the drama, The Endless Knot describes the disaster in frank detail. Kurt Diemberger's account of the final days of success, accident, storm and escape during which five climbers died, including his partner Julie Tullis and the great British mountaineer Al Rouse, is lacerating in its sense of tragedy, loss and dogged survival. Only Diemberger and Willi Bauer escaped the mountain. K2 had claimed the lives of 13 climbers that summer. Kurt Diemberger is one of only two climbers to have made first ascents of two 8000-metre peaks, Broad Peak and Dhaulagiri. A superb mountaineer, the K2 trauma left him physically and emotionally ravaged, but it also marked him out as an instinctive and tenacious survivor. After a long period of recovery Diemberger published The Endless Knot and resumed life as a mountaineer, filmmaker and international lecturer.
The Endless Knot K2 Mountain of Dreams and Destiny Kurt Diemberger
It was an interesting account of his and Julie Tullis' assault of K2 (the world's second highest mountain and probably most technically challenging., Towards the end, this true story becomes absolutely harrowing and nail-biting. While it has a great deal of sadness, Diemberger's book is also a love story--not just between he and Julie, but also between them and the mountain. It's an amazing tale of human endurance, the luck of the draw, and survival against all odds. Seven people were trapped in a blizzard in the death zone for 9 days. Diemberger and one other climber made it back to base camp alive.Although the story was exciting, the writer doesn't really get into it until halfway through the book. Through part of it you feel like you are being given the do's and don't s of climbing mountains; of ecologically mindfulness; safety; and up through the first half of the book, he goes back and forth between various events at that time--some of which really don't seem to have a clear connection. A little too abstract for me, but not everyone with a great story to tell is also a gifted writer. However, it's definitely worth the read if you like mountaineering nonfiction.

The Endless Knot K2 Mountain of Dreams and Destiny Kurt Diemberger Reviews
I recommend this if you like books about mountain climbing. More than that it is a book of relationships that people form because of their love for the sport. Also a book about cultures very different than ours.
A good book but more background info than I expected. However, it is all justified when one considers the criticism of others by those that were not there to experience it all. I truly admire these individuals!!
If you enjoy reading about the personal experiences of mountain climbers, this book will satisfy in spades. For me, it started off somewhat slowly, but I was soon caught up in the life and death events in the life of this author and his climbing companion.
If you enjoy reading about mountaineering and get some insight into the personalities of some of the famous climbers and what motivates them to climb some of the most dangerous mountains, like K-2, this is the book to read. I enjoyed reading it immensely and was unable to put the book down.
The tale is not without its merits, the facts are interesting, but there's too little climbing detail and too much "feelings", in my view. Plus somebody should have broken the ". . ." key on his typewriter, it's very annoying and pervasive, like
"rather late into the sun of a new day . . ."; what is wrong with "rather late into the sun of a new day."?
one of the rare mountaineering books written from the heart and soul. Not overly technical, not someone's diary, not a critique of another's issues you slowly become intimately involved with the participants struggles, victories and defeats. There are sentences that will literally bring tears to your eyes. (I don't want to spoil it for the reader)
for one who aspires to experience altitude, to see the stars clearly, to push the limits this is a book to read before you put on your crampons.
I thoroughly enjoyed and was inspired by this book. Although the beginning is a bit heavy and ponderous, it is well worth pushing thru to the "crux"
for me it was the best alpine book I've ever read.
I agree with other reviewers who complained about the fragmented structure of the book. The author jumps around so much, almost writing in stream-of-consciousness style. It is almost impossible to keep timelines or events straight. It is virtually unreadable and I gave up at the 20% mark.
