When Tara Blankenship's writing assignment takes her to an "eco village" on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, she anticipates a quiet couple of weeks in a quaint setting. (She's far too mature to use the word boring, thank you very much.) What she stumbles into is anything but quiet and quaint.

Someone has been slaughtering livestock to scare the villagers, mysterious intruders are searching the property at night, and Tara finds a grisly welcome-warning on the porch of her guest cottage. To top it off, the surly neighbor nearly runs her off the road on her first day. Why are the handsome ones always such jerks?

Malcolm Ashcroft is the last person a sane woman would want to deal with, but he may be the only one with the key to solving the mystery--and giving Tara the story of her career. Of course... he might also be the man behind all the trouble.

I haven't read all, but quite a lot of Lindsay Buroker's books. She's got a way of yanking you in to the story and keeping you there--my bum's sore after reading the book in one sitting. The book cover makes it look more romantic than it is by the way; it's way more adventure-mystery than romance, but the little bit it has is exciting. Especially that last joke at the end, I had my mouth open as much as Jasmine I'm sure.

Oh and of course, her novels would not be complete without some explosions and great banter, you'll get lots of that here.

To be honest, I could easily see this becoming a series of sorts. Tara's character is really likable, and she's obviously curious enough for her to come across more adventures (wink, wink--maybe she could put that blog to use this way).

So yeah, a light fun read! Definitely recommend.

Wounded edition by Lindsay Buroker Romance eBooks Reviews

Being a bit of an IT nerd myself, I couldn’t help but smile at a cast of characters that includes a blogger and a girl that *might* read sci-fi romances. The male lead has an interesting past that leads to his current emotionally wounded state. His present occupation is just as distinctive, but much more sedate, until runaway pigs, midnight prowlers, and a nosy blogger intrude on his solitude. Lindsay Buroker has a gift for dialogue, and I appreciated the wry observations, clever banter, and snarky internal monologues. I had to suspend disbelief for part of the action, but I’ve come to accept that mystery novels would not be very interesting if all the characters did what I would do and let the police handle it. Besides, what fun is a book without explosions? Overall, this was a quick, fun, enjoyable read.
Tara, during her summer job as a blogger, decides to work at a small eco village and help the villagers with their day-to-day affairs. But right from day one, she is confronted with the mystery of mutilated bodies of livestock being found at peoples' doorsteps.. Her current boss Sam and the villagers in general are suspicious of her neighbour Malcolm being responsible but will Tara find out the truth? Or for that matter, should she meddle in such affairs? I am definitely not going to dish out any spoilers.

Yet another great story from Lindsay Buroker. The more I read her books, the more I admire her simple yet effective writing style. She is a natural story teller and this is her first attempt at contemporary mystery sprinkled with romance which turns out well. At some instances it reminds me of the Emperor's Edge series but otherwise the plot is completely different. Buroker captures the reader's attention from the first page itself and you cannot do anything except continue reading till the last word..!! I am looking forward to more mysteries by her.

Wounded is a short, reasonably sweet romance with strong mystery ties. It's also the first of Lindsay's books outside of her usual fantasy/steampunk-esque genre that I've read.

The sleuthing protagonist, Tara, reminded me a bit of Lindsay's most awesome character, Amaranthe (from The Emperor's Edge series), but outside of that, the similarities were few.

The 'wounded' love interest was quite nice to look at (or read about) and fit the bill for the story quite nicely, but I was expecting some of Lindsay's usual quirkiness. This wasn't apparent. I did enjoy the rather intriguing job history though. Lindsay taught me a few things in this book.

The dialogue was Lindsay's usual witty banter-like style, which is always a pleasure to read. I enjoyed the barely veiled flirting and sexual innuendos that were sprinkled into the story.

The mystery/thriller story was a bit strange. It worked, but it didn't sit right. I also felt it was quite rushed at the end.

I didn't really see why the book is called Wounded, it doesn't seem to fit the story in my mind. I thought something suitably geekish in the mushroom field could have worked better, especially if it were to be used as a bit of a joke in the story.

The editing in my version was a little less polished than Lindsay's usual books, but the typos didn't really subtract from the story.
I liked this book; it was well written, with just a few minor typos. The hero and heroine were very likeable and the plot was good. However, it did not engage me the way Ms. Buroker's other works did.

The characterization was not as well developed as it could have been and the romance was a little too understated. The protagonists in Ms. Buroker's other books really make an impact and are very strongly developed. The hero and heroine in this book came so close to being outstanding characters, but they did not quite make it. They were extremely likeable, but even with excellent repartee, they felt a bit like gems that needed a bit more polishing to shine through.

As for the romance, it never seemed to have the chance to fully develop. It was so close, and the bits that were there showed a lot of potential, but they just seemed to fizzle out. I would have loved this romance when I was in my teens and first reading Harlequin Romances and Georgette Heyer books. Now that I am old and jaded, I would have liked more intimacy---no, I don't mean sex, I mean intimacy. Now that the subject of sex has arisen, however, that would have been nice, too. Just one short sex scene that wouldn't have to be too explicit would get my vote. I realize the story was centred around the initial meeting of the hero and heroine and the very beginning of their romantic feelings for each other. The reader knows that more will happen off screen at the end of the story, which is good, and that was not a bad place to end the story. My personal feeling is that the story would have worked better as a romantic suspense book, though, if the romance had been given more development.

I'm still happy that I bought and read this book and I know I will reread it. I love Ms. Buroker's fantasy/science fiction/futuristic romance books, including the ones by Ruby Lionsdrake. However, I would definitely try another of her romantic suspense books if she writes more. As for this book, I highly recommend it to anyone who likes this genre.
